Laura Mariani, Photographer in Boulder Colorado
Who are you, where are you from, and what kind of photography do you specialize in?
I’m Laura Mariani, originally from Italy, now based in Colorado. I specialize in elegant and timeless wedding photography, as well as portrait photography for women at all stages of life—maternity, personal branding, senior sessions, and more. My style is rooted in authenticity, capturing natural beauty, and genuine emotions in every frame. I use mostly natural light to create soft, ethereal images that exude elegance.
My journey into photography began over a decade ago when I was working in administration at a private hospital in Italy. I felt stuck in a repetitive routine and wanted to explore something more creative. After taking a photography class and assisting other photographers, I discovered my passion for telling stories through images. That passion has guided me ever since.
How is shooting weddings in Milan similar to or different from shooting them in Colorado?
Weddings in Milan often have a grand, fashion-forward aesthetic with a touch of tradition—think ornate churches, timeless architecture, and chic, sophisticated celebrations. In contrast, weddings in Colorado embrace the beauty of the natural surroundings, often leaning into the rustic or outdoor vibe with mountain views and open skies.
What connects both, though, is the love and unique personalities of each couple. It’s my job to capture their essence, whether in a centuries-old villa or at a scenic mountain top venue.
(Also, this incredible story about how you met your husband while shooting a wedding—can you write a bit about that? Super cute)
Actually, I met my husband, Joaquin, during a birthday party where I was the photographer, and he was a guest. It's not common to connect with guests at events like this, but this time was different. Americans are often more easygoing and welcoming compared to Italians, who tend to keep their distance from staff members. Joaquin and I clicked right away, and the rest is history! It was such a special, unexpected moment that completely changed my life.
3. Some of my clients reach out to me for styling help after seeing a photo of themselves they dislike. Often, I think they looked great, but the photo didn’t do them justice. Could you share some quick, basic tips for posing or looking your best in unplanned/improvised group photos?
Absolutely! Here are a few simple tips for looking your best in unplanned photos:
Angle Your Body: Instead of facing the camera head-on, turn slightly to the side for a more flattering profile.
Posture Is Key: Stand tall, roll your shoulders back, and engage your core to avoid slouching.
Relax Your Hands: Keep them loose or lightly touching your hip or a nearby object for a natural look.
Smile Naturally: Think of a happy memory or moment—it helps create a genuine, warm smile.
Chin Placement: Slightly elongate your neck and tilt your chin down just a touch to avoid unflattering shadows.
4. For clients booking a professional photoshoot with you, what do you wish they would wear when it comes to clothes, hair, and makeup, and how can they best prepare for their session with a photographer in general?
Preparation is key to achieving stunning results!
Clothing: Neutral and timeless colors—white, beige, pastel tones, or light blue jeans—photograph beautifully. Avoid bold patterns or logos that can distract from the overall elegance of the shot.
Hair and Makeup: Opt for a polished yet natural look. For women, professional makeup that enhances your features and a simple hairstyle are ideal.
Preparation: Share details about your vision for the shoot! The more I understand your preferences and personality, the better we can create something that truly represents you.
5. Having been to so many weddings, in your opinion, what are the best types of outfits and colors to wear to a warm-season wedding as a guest (not part of the wedding party)?
For a warm-season wedding, the time of day plays a big role in what to wear. For a morning or daytime wedding, cocktail dresses are a great choice—light, elegant, and comfortable. For an evening wedding, a long gown can be more fitting for the occasion.
The location chosen by the couple also greatly influences what you should wear. For example, an outfit for a beach wedding will be different than what you'd wear to a wedding at a castle or on a mountaintop. However, regardless of the location, the basic rule is to always dress elegantly because a wedding is an incredibly important day for our loved ones.
Light and breathable fabrics, like chiffon, silk, are perfect for warm weather and keep you comfortable throughout the event. It’s also helpful to know the wedding's color theme, as this can guide your outfit choice. If there is a color scheme, different shades of that theme work beautifully. Or you can incorporate an accent color from the theme into your accessories or details, which adds a thoughtful touch without stealing focus from the couple.
When it comes to jewelry, keep it elegant and minimal, whether it's a statement necklace or delicate earrings. The key is to complement the overall look without drawing too much attention away from the bride and groom.
